LCD Controller Board … Check
Here’s a quick update on the project. I received my LCD controller board and everything is good. I did some quick test with my trusty netbook and as you can see below looks quite good. Now to start gathering the other supplies … Endlighten, LED stripes, etc!
LCD Tear Down
Well I got started on my MT project today. This first step I had to take was to find out if my LCD from my notebook had any FFC issues and it seems that everything is good on that front. I also had to find out if there is a compatible controller card from my LCD. Since it is originally a laptop display it needs to be converted into a desktop display for MT applications. I’m still waiting on that information but a thread at the afterdawn forum was very helpful in my initial research on the conversion. The reason this step is so important is because it will ultimately decide if this project continues with the materials I have and also the design of my NUI all together.
The LCD is a 15.4″ display and came out of a Gateway MX7120 notebook. Here are some pictures of the tear down:
Please excuses the low quality photos. These were taken with a camera phone as my wife has our good camera at work.
Multi Touch Project
After seeing a recent episode of one my favorite shows (Revison3′s Hak5), I decided this would be a fun and rewarding project to take on. I originally wanted to build a multi touch coffee table similar to the Microsoft Surface but my wife persuaded me I should start out with something smaller first (I think she’s right). Besides, I had a notebook die on me and there’s no sense in letting the LCD go to waste. I plan on using this MT interface primarily as a MIDI controller for music application down the road. If you are interested in MT and DIY solutions then the fine folks over at the NUI Group are full of helpful tips and information. Below are some MT demos and the HAK5 episode:
